Look, No Wires

I went to see an animatronics exhibition at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences yesterday (think: Oscars), where I saw on display such obsessions of film geekdom as the telescoping eyeball from the trash compactor scene in Star Wars, the morphing wolf from An American Werewolf in London, and the "You want to see something scary?" face from Beetlejuice. It was good fun.

There were a lot of fake dogs there too, some of which were better than others, and one that was just a disembodied head from a movie called Cats and Dogs. Disturbing. Max from How the Grinch Stole Christmas was pretty cute but also not totally convincing. I guess it's just hard to get the real thing right.

Here, Arthur does his best animatronic imitation.
