I always think of labrador retrievers as the all-American dog, although I don't know why - they're popular all over the world. Canadian in origin (Newfies, actually), they were bred to be water-lovers that would fetch the cork floats on fishing nets and swim them ashore. Now, they'll fetch a ball one million times without getting bored. They're good-natured, loyal dogs, and I've never met one I didn't like.
