If you know you want to adopt a certain breed of dog, and you can't find one at the local pound, go to a specialized shelter. This sweet girl is up for adoption at Southland Collie Rescue, which is based in Pasadena but has representatives throughout Southern California fostering homeless collies in private homes until they can find permanent owners.
If collies aren't your thing, just google your breed of choice or try petfinder.com, which will provide a list of all the shelters in your area.
