Today's Rescue

When you go to the shelter and see dogs who have low impound numbers on their information cards, that means they are shelter returns - dogs who were adopted out and brought back. When the numbers are very low, like some of the dogs on today's rescue page, it means that years have passed between adoption and return.

Sometimes the previous owners had serious health issues or were elderly and could no longer care for their animals; sometimes the owners died and had no one to pass their dogs to. And sometimes it's just owners for whom dogs were never really a part of the family, and giving them up was something they did en route to the shopping mall. Because really, if you cared about your dog, you wouldn't give "getting a divorce" or "can no longer deal with shedding/digging/barking/escaping" as reasons to dump him in a shelter. Perhaps people don't realize that they're most likely dooming their dogs to death. Mostly, I think that people just don't care. Not really.

I like to pretend those people don't exist.
