Today's Rescue - Charlie and Daphne

These dogs seem like no-brainer adoption candidates - why are they at the shelter? Charlie is a six-year-old lab mix who is great on leash and loves everyone. He's mellow and calm. Daphne is a four-year-old shepherd mix, is really social and friendly and just look at those ears! They're both at the Harbor shelter.

There has been a lot of talk in the animal-rescue community this year (or is it every year?) about how upper management in the L.A. County and city shelters aren't doing their jobs particularly well at the animals' expense. The homeless-pet situation would be a crisis even with Mother Teresa at the helm, so it's especially distressing to hear about general managers who don't seem to understand just how much the animals in their care are suffering. They don't seem capable of mobilizing their resources effectively.

It's not like I'm talking about velvet beds in every cage. Basic medical care and protection from the cold would be good places to start.

And, of course, as many adoptions as possible, on our end. Charlie and Daphne are great dogs who deserve good homes. Take one of them home today!
