I recently scored a book of Helen Levitt color photographs of the streets of New York called Slide Show, a selection of which were first shown at MOMA in the 70s. They are Awe-some. I get grit under my fingernails just looking at them.
Among the portraits of various people are a handful of photos of people with their dogs, mostly just hanging out, and Levitt really captures the animals as New York denizens as much as their human counterparts - a little tired, a little sweaty, but managing to survive. These three are my favorites.

(My scans don't begin to do them justice.)
